Buller Leads British Formula 3 After Strong Points Haul at Silverstone

 27th May 2013

Jordan King (above) rounded off what he described as a mixed weekend in the best possible style, winning the third and final Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series race at Silverstone.

King finished second behind overall race winner John Bryant-Meisner, but with the Swede not eligble for points this weekend it meant that Carlin driver King picked up the maximum points in the final race to make up for a retirement in race one.

Bryant-Meisner made the best start from pole position to leave King in a tight battle around the opening corners with Fortec’s Will Buller, the latter squeezing into second through the Maggotts/Becketts section which allowed Felix Serralles to also demote King to fourth.

King was then suddenly gifted back second place moments later when the two Fortec drivers ahead of him collided on the straight heading into Brooklands, Serralles’ car briefly getting airborne and spinning into retirement, while team-mate Buller carried on in third place.

Bryant-Meisner held on for the remainder of the 30-minute encounter despite his Carlin rival trimming a once three-second gap to just over a second with a string of fastest laps, King eventually finishing 1.018s behind the Performance Racing Europe driver to claim full points for the race.

Buller was a lonely third, the International podium being filled by three British drivers as Jann Mardenborough recovered from an off-track moment at Club in the congested first tour of the Northamptonshire circuit to finish third (fourth on track) a further 11 seconds behind Buller, who leaves Silverstone as the early championship leader.

Behind them, Carlin’s Nicholas Latifi charge through from 12th on the grid to just miss out on a podium with fifth overall, first passing the two Double R Dallara-Mercedes machines of Sean Gelael and Antonio Giovinazzi before taking advantage of a drive-through penalty being handed to Fortec’s Felipe Guimaraes, the Brazilian having fallen foul of disrespecting track limits.

Giovinazzi and Gelael proceeded to fight amongst themselves in the closing laps, the Italian getting the better of his young Indonesian team-mate Gelael by slicing inside under braking for Brooklands, the Double R trio finishing in tow with Tatiana Calderon right on their tail.

Ed Jones meanwhile made it a hat-trick of National class triumphs at Silverstone for himself and his Team West-Tec squad by finishing in 10th place, leading the class from start to finish ahead of Sun Zheng (CF Racing), while Cameron Twynham fought his way up to third in class.

Jones therefore comfortably leads the National class championship standings thanks to his triple success, while a win and two second place finishes for Buller means the Fortec Motorsport driver holds an early 21-point lead over team-mate Guimaraes, with King’s race three success leaping him up to third, a further two points back.

The next round of the 2013 Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series visits Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, supporting the illustrious 24-hours of Spa event on July 25-27.

Quotes:
Jordan King #2 Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen
“It wasn’t the perfect start as I lost the lead off the line, but after that the speed was really good throughout the whole race really. Obviously with what happened yesterday it made things hard. I said on the radio afterwards that it should have really been two wins this weekend because the speed was always there.”

Ed Jones #81 Team West-Tec Dallara-Toyota
The car felt really good, it’s been great all through this weekend. I got a reasonable start so it made it a bit easier. It’s been a great weekend so obviously a big thank you to West-Tec for helping me get these results.”
